Tuffy Glove Box Install
by
Ben Saunders

Tuffy has a new glove box for those of us with Early Broncos. As with all Tuffy products this one is well designed and sturdy, the box includes the new pry resistant latch that stays closed even when unlocked.

The shipping box contains the glove box, mounting strap, mounting hardware, and a block off plate for those that are not using the stock location for the fuse box

Installation is very straight forward and the instructions are well documented. Tools needed are a philips screw driver, 1/8" allen wrench, and 1/4" wrench or deep socket.

The first thing that needs to be done is to remove your old glove box door and latching hardware using the philips screwdriver. This dash had been cut to clear the roll cage, the paper liner has also fallen apart after years of use. The screws attaching the glove box door to the dash are on the underside of the dash.

Place the mounting strap behind the dash covering the flange above and to the sides of the glove box opening. Then slide the new glove box into the dash.

Open the door and install mounting hardware into the mounting strap through the glove box using a 1/8" allen wrench. The mounting bolt near the latching mechanism is a tight fit for a allen wrench and may require the removal of the latch in few cases. The block-off plate for the fuse block mount is designed to be mounted on the box from the outside. I decided to mount it from the inside of the box, this required slight trimming of the plate to fit the inside of the box using a metal file. The plate is secured with nylock nuts using a 1/4" wrench to tighten them.

The entire installation was complete in 20min. To add to the new look I painted the dash with some new paint and remounted the glove box.

My roll cage was out due to some other maintenance. To check clearance I temporarily set it back into position

As you can see there is clearance for the door to open with the roll cage.

With the new glove box installed, that area again becomes a usable storage area that is much more secure than original factory condition.
